Learn If LAP-BAND® System is for you.

Do you qualify for LAP-BAND® surgery? Learn what the definition of morbid obesity is and discover the many facotrs that you and your Doctor must consider to determine whether you might be a candidate for morbid obesity surgery.

You may have battled a weight problem all you life, tried every diet, only to lose weight and quickly regain it and more than you lost. If you qualify, gastric banding surgery might be your answer.

If diet and exercise have failed to bring the weight loss you desire, not only for better looks but for improved health conditions, then this newest laparoscopic weight loss surgery may be for you.

If you weigh twice your ideal weight or weigh at least 100 lbs more than your ideal weight, you are considered "morbidly obese"

If you are morbidly obese, this degree of weight greatly reduces your life expectancy and you are at risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, gallstones, heart and vascular diseases, joint problems and more.

To determine whether LAP-BAND® System is for you, National Institutes of Health guidelines state that a potential candidate should have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or greater. Or you may also qualify if you have a BMI of between 35-39.9 and suffer from other medical symptoms associated with morbid obesity. In addition the following criteria will be looked at:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • weigh at least twice what you should weigh
  • or 100 lbs (45 kilos) over your ideal accepted weight
  • be overweight for at least 5 years
  • serious diets and exercises have not worked
  • you must not be suffering from any other diseases that are responsible for extra weight
  • be prepared to make substantial changes in your eating habits
  • continue to be monitored by your health professional
  • do not drink alcohol to excess
  • be well informed about the surgical procedure and the effects of treatment
  • determined to lose weight and improve your health
  • aware of how your life may change after the operation, including the need to chew food well and inability to eat large meals

The above criteria will all be considered in your individual case. If you weight is less than specified above, you still may be considered if you have serious health threats. Your total lifetime commitment are most important for your continued success before and after surgery. As with any surgery there are risks, less with lap band than with many other surgeries, but it is vitally important that you discuss the risks as well as the benefits with your doctor.

Take a look at our calculators, they'll give you an idea of what we'll be looking at.
